People who read are often willing to “go along for the ride,” which is not acceptable in film. The audience demands a discrete structure in film which is not demanded from books.

So, a film division of Macmillan will be a magnet for books that are specifically written to become films, or to have authors they like write books specifically written to become films, and they won’t want to adapt a particular book to film simply for love of the book, but because some Hwood dev exec thinks he can spot the winners in a crowd (of books), or indirectly induce writers to not write actual books, but proto-scripts.
